Iraq, My next big adventure
Hello everyone...

Sorry I have been MIA from myspace and facebook for a while, Holidays and recent workload have just had me swamped! So I wanted to give everyone an update on what has been going on with me lately. I have had a lot of great opportunites open up for me at work lately which are going to make for some exciting new adventures. My big news is that I am going to be traveling to Kuwait and then Iraq for work. Unfortuneatly, due to security reasons I can't reveal exactly when I am travling or where, but I can say I am leaving pretty soon. I am going over with the company I work for which is a contracter for the military and I will be working on military installations. Again, I can't say exactly what I am doing, but I will say that my work is all part of a larger effort to begin bringing our troops home and letting the Iraq peole run their own country! I am going to be in country for about a month as well as in Kuwait before and after my Iraq visit. HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS, I am planning on bringing a digital camera and doing weekly picture posts as well as a video blog of my experience over there. I am going to blog about and video as much of my experiences as possible so that everyone can see a little bit into the daily life of a contractor working in Iraq. I also am hoping to get some time with the men and women of our armed forces that are stationed in Iraq, ask them some questions and have them send some messages back to the USA. I am going to be very busy between now and my deployment so I won't have much time to be online, however I hope that everyone will check back on my site and look out for my pictures and video blogs. I will do my best to check mail but please keep in mind that my interenet access is going to be very limited as well as my time. As most know I am not a very political person, however I am filled with pride and joy to know that I am playing a very small role in helping to GET OUR TROOPS HOME!

So that update on his facebook a couple of weeks ago wasn't a dig at James. His blog says that he will be there helping our armed forces return home, and I'm happy about that, but I also know that as they're sending some home, others are being deployed there. That was the entire reason we had to move up my son's wedding. I will definitely be praying for Steven my son's new father-in-law and all our troops!

I am not sure what that means and can't figure out what could help bring the troops home. Hmmmm I know there is a lot of money to be made by people that are willing to go work in Iraq (not the military), sure hope he stays safe.

In Kuwait
Well, I am in Kuwait and waiting to head to Iraq. I spent 2 hours on a plane to ATL, 14 hours on a plane to Dubai and 2 hours on a plane to Kuwait. It has been a bit of an adventuer getting here. My luggage was lost and I am down to re-wearing my underwear until my luggage arrives. I have been taking a few pictues and some video blogs, but I am having trouble getting it off of my camera and into the computer (if anyone has any expertiese in getting my SD card to work in computer please help, it has worked before but not now for some reason. Plus there aren't a lot of great pictures because I have only seen things at night so far. I haven't seen daylight since I got on my flight sunday afternoon, it is 3:30 am right now in Kuwait. I have to say from what I have seen it is a beautiful place and the people are super cool and I totally dig them. If I can get my SD card fixed I will have some cools stuff to show ya! Well, i am off to bed, batteling Jet Lag Right now, but I did order room service and ate my cheeseburger and fries while watching a rerun of Ugly Bettey and Deseperate Housewives on the Flat Screen TV in my room Wink From inside the room it is hard to tell I am not even in America. Can't wait to send more updates. Please keep checking back to see what new adventures come my way!

An update from Iraq

Hello to everyone back home or wherever you are in the world. Had a
few mintues and some working internet so I wanted to post a blog about
some things that have been happening to me on the trip. I have so much
to say and not even time to say it all. Basically life has been a super
crazy rollercoaster ride since I stepped foot on the plane over here.
It all started with a 2 hour flight to Atlanta, then a 14 hour flight
to Dubai, next a 2 hour flight to Kuwait city, 2 hours to get a Visa,
an hour spent filling a report for my lost bag and a 30 minute ride to
the hotel, it was a very long day! Once in Kuwait it was all fancy and
fun times, we stayed at a beautiful fancy hotel, J.W. Marriott, with
great food and fantastic service. Spent two nights there then it was a
2 hour flight to Baghdad, this became the most unique and exciting part
thus far. The plane lands on the military side of Baghdad International
Airport and we are instructed to exit the plane and wait on the
tarmack, next is a very long walk with all my luggage to meet our point
of contact, then wait in line to be given linens and assigned a tent.
The first tent I had slept about 25 guys and was very close quarters,
no room at all. We shower and use the bathroom in a trailer that is
commonly known as "The Cadillac", it really isn't that bad at all.
Luckily it is winter here right now so the weather is very mild, about
70 during the day and 40 at night, that sounds like ideal weather, but
the wind always blows, the sky is always overcast and filled with sand,
so bascially it is sometimes hard to figure out where the ground ends
and the sky begins. There is rarely any privacy here and it is so hard
to get use to everything being surrounded by Twalls. Twalls are giant
concete slabs that are about 20 feet high, they surround every single
structure, tent, bathroom or building here. It is really hard to figure
you way around because all you see is Twalls in every direction,
basically you are surround by grey and brown all the time. The food is
pretty good, we eat at what they call the Dfac (Dining Facility) there
are lots of choices and the food is very high in calories and starches,
I am already starting to get fat
The first night was pretty hard to sleep, as I layed in my top bunk all
I could hear was the sound of nonstop hellicoptors flying around and
other guys snoring. For the most part I feel completely safe all the
time and I am having a great time. I have met some amazing Airman and
Soldiers who live in these conditions day in and day out, I have
completely gained a whole new respect for them and want to remind
everyone at home to please help support our troops in anyway possible.
They live and work in an environment that most Americans will never
see, experience or could even understand. PLEASE TAKE 1O MINTUES TO
READ UP ON HOW YOU CAN HELP SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, I AM LISTING A COUPLE
WEBSITES TO CHECK OUT, PLEASE DO THIS!!!

http://www.operation-support-our-troops.org

http:

That is all for now, more coming later, I am still trying to get my
videos to upload but the internet is so slow and spotty that I can't
seem to get any of them to fully upload. Thanks for reading, hope you
enjoyed!
Check out my pics, I got to ride in a C130....

Bye for now from the Middle East...

Steven

Scary, but he chose to be a mercenary. He knew what he was getting into. It's not like he was drafted or had to do it. He went for the big bucks. Let's not make him out to be heroic.

Lala, I know they have a lot of American non-military contractors over there rebuilding, so I assumed that is what he was going for. I know he said what he was going for but I can't remember, I will try to find his original post for you.

A Sunday Morning In Iraq
Well, I had some time and wanted to send out an update on how my week was. This past week in Iraq has shown me the widest range of emotions possible. I started my week flying on an Iraqi C130 wearing body armor and completely unkaware of what to expect. If you don't know a C130 is large military cargo plane that has fold down seats in the back, there is no beverage service and hearing protection is required! Upon arriving at our new destination we were assigned a tent and settled in for a week of long hours and dusty windy days. The accomidations were much nicer then my last tent, I had a desk, a chair and even a locker for my clothes, I felt like I had checked into the Marriott again. After a few days we began get into a groove the week was going great. Our first time off of work we were able to travel to the Great Ziggurat of Ur which is one of the oldest structures in the world and has some amazing history behind it, if you get time you should google it, the place is fascinating (Photos posted on myspace.) This was definately a high part of my week, it was such a surreal experience to walk up the steps of a temple that people had walked up more then 4000 years ago. Heading back to base I began to really reflect on my life and think about how small and insignificant I am in the grand scheme of things.
The next exciting event for the week was a low point for me and brought to the surface some feelings and emotions that I didn't expect. Being a bullrider I always felt that I am pretty brave and could stare death in the face and not think twice about it, boy was I wrong! I was walking down the street to drop off my clothes at the local laundary facility when I began hearing a very loud siren, I wasn't sure exactly what the siren meant or what course of action I needed to take. After a few seconds I began to see military personal heading to an area called a bunker (basicaly a concrete cube surrounded by sandbags, these bunkers are all over the base and I had walked by them many times.) I decided the best idea for me was to follow and take shelter with everyone else. As I entered the shelter the siren began again only this time it was followed by a very loud voice that kept repeating "We are under attack, We are under attack." Hearing this is when I really began to feel uncomfortable. I squated down on the cold concrete and felt that my hands and knees had begun to shake, this was an unusual sensation that I don't often feel. As the siren and voice stopped I just sat there waiting and wondering if the next sound I heard was going to be an explostion or gun fire, this was such a difficult and awkward feeling, something I hope I never have to endure again. Luckily and fortuneatly there was never an explostion or any sounds at all, in fact it was a deafining silence that I don't think I will ever forget only broken up by a voice stating "all clear, all clear." Some of the best words I think I have ever heard being shouted from a speaker. All of the soldiers casually strolled from the bunker and returned to buisness as usual, this is a common occurance for them, I don't know how they deal with this on a day to day basis, but I was not the same for several hours. I had to return to my tent and just sit for a long time, I had lost all ability to focus or concentrate on anything, my hands were still shaking and I felt my stomach turning. After all is said and done I was informed by several personal that it happens all the time and the chances of actually getting hit are very low, I guess in hind sight that makes me feel better, but at the time I was definately moved by the event.
That is all for now, it is time to get back to work. I will get more written down when I have the time. Right now I am going to finish some work and enjoy the beautiful sunday morning we are having today. God Bless all the military personal serving everywhere in the world to everyone else that reads this be thankfull for everything you have in your life.
