District reprimands teacher over bag of poo
YAKIMA, Wash. -- A teacher who sent a 5-year-old student home with a bag of feces in his backpack was issued a formal reprimand, according to a document released Thursday.
The West Valley School District warned kindergarten teacher Sue Graham in a letter that she could face further discipline or termination for any similar behavior in the future.
The district had been tight-lipped about Graham's punishment following the incident, and previously said only that "appropriate action" had been taken.
A copy of the letter was released Thursday in response to a public disclosure request from our sister station, KIMA-TV.
The student at Apple Valley Elementary arrived home April 17 with a bagged up piece of human feces in his backpack and a note that read, "This little turd was on the floor in my room."
According to the letter written by Rick Ferguson, the district's human resources director, Graham admitted to finding the feces, putting it in the student's backpack with soiled clothes, and writing the note.
In an interview in April, the boy's father said his son had had a couple of accidents in the classroom in the past.
He told Graham there were extra clothes in his son's backpack, but never imagined the teacher would send his son home with evidence of his accident.
"What would have happened if it had stayed in there and she hadn't checked the bag?" he said. "And other kids were playing on the bus and it got out? And it's a very hazardous thing. It's disgusting!"
District officials described Graham as a "veteran teacher who's done a lot of work for us for 30 years."
The boy was moved out of Graham's classroom a few days after the incident.
