PostSubject: New Year's traditions?   Wed Dec 31, 2008 5:11 am

Thinking about tonight and then New Year's day, I wondered if you all have any traditions. For the past several years, I've had the grandkids over for a New Year's Eve party, while the moms and dads go do their thing. Then, on New Year's day, I always prepare the dinner my mom and my grandma, before her, used to fix: pork roast, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes.

What do you do for New Year's Eve and New Year's day?

The German in me is doing flips! I love sauerkraut. Hold the pork though. Very Happy

Hey Inky!!!!!!!!!!! Guess what naughty thing I've discovered? You put this thing called white chocolate or Almond Vanilla Bark and melt it in the microwave. Then roll some Snyder's long stick pretzels in the melted chocolate and put them in the fridge for an hour and OMG....what a tasty treat. As you can tell I'm working on my culinary skills. Shocked lol!

I always go with the pork and some sort of cabbage, I usually make breaded boneless pork chops I brown and bake and fried buttered cabbage ( with onion and caraway seed) and Spaetzel dumplings which I'm doing tomorrow.
I grew up with the pork and cabbage but I know some do the black eyed peas too.

My father always just fried pork chops but my MIL always breaded them and baked them...major difference! I bread them with egg and bread crumbs, brown them on both sides, put in covered roaster pan or foil covered with a little water on bottom and bake covered for about 1/2 hour to 45 min depending on size and amount then uncover and bake the water (juices in bottom ) off.
A good breading for pork chops is to process Stove-Top (for pork or chicken ) into bread crumbs and bread them with that too.
I bought a whole boneless pork loin and had my daughter get some city chicken sticks from the meat dept and may cut the pork into cubes and make the breaded pork like that or wait for another day to do that,

For the first time in over 25 years I am not making Runza for New Years Eve. I am under the weather and just don't feel up to it. I am making 2 kinds of soup. I love soup.

We always have Pork tenderloin and/or a Boston butt, collards, Black eyed peas and Corn bread. I'm also going to make a Chocolate Banana Pudding a new recipe I found last week.

Everything sounds so good, ladies, even your soups, Granny. I love soup, too. I'm just sorry you're not feeling good. Is this something new or were you sick over Christmas? I hope I'm not being too nosey. I just ask because I care.

It is frigid, here in southern Ohio, and getting colder by the minute. I stopped on the way home from work and picked up a whole pork loin and sauerkraut for tomorrow. C'mon over Franny. I'll share my sauerkraut, if you bring some of those chocolate-covered pretzels with you. Laughing I just wish they made low carb pretzels. I think I miss them more than I miss sugar.

I'll have to try your pork chops breaded in Stove Top stuffing sometime, Shirley. I'll bet the kids would love that.

And, icecoffee, I've never made black-eyed peas in my life, but I know a lot of people have them for New Year's. Are they hard to make? I'll have to try them sometime.

I was talking to one of the gals on my staff today about New Year's traditions, and she makes something that sounds good to me. She fries bacon. Then, in the bacon grease, she sautes cut up cabbage and sliced potatoes until tender. I asked what she serves with it (if anything), and she said just some kind of pork. This year she's doing country style ribs. Doesn't that sound good? What's not to like about bacon, right?

I hope you all have fun tonight, whatever you're doing, and stay safe. I'm waiting for the grandkids to get here. They'd better hurry up, though, before I fall asleep.
Laughing

I got this crud 2 days ago and it is socking my respiratory system pretty hard. I am used to it so as long as I am careful it won't last long. I have until Tuesday off from work so I will be fine. Thanks for asking Inky. Very Happy

I hope you feel better soon Granny!

I made steak, shrimp and salad for dinner. Nothing special - it just seemed like a New Year's Eve kind of menu. I sort of wished we would have gone out; I'm bored to death and doing wash!

DH and I went out this afternoon during a snow squall, ran a few errands and ended up at Ruby Tuesday's for a late lunch. We ate, came home, pounced on our respective computers, took a nap, watched Survivor Man for a few hours *I can be nice on occasion Wink I gave him a backrub and then he went to bed at 9:30. I'm watching Bones.

Granny, I do hope your cold ends quickly. Nasty bit of work when it goes into the chest. Please take care . I didn't know what Runza was and was surprised to see that it's like pierogi's but in a bread dough instead of pasta type dough. They sound wonderful Smile

We'll have pork and sauerkraut and mashed tomorrow, too. I'll start the day early watching the Mummers Parade in Philly and the Rose Bowl Parade before the bowl game(s). I think I'm becoming a creature of habit lol

HAPPY NEW YEAR dear DUTS

Y'all be careful with that "respiratory crud," Granny and Franny. (Hey! That rhymes!). It's nothing to mess around with.

Mappy's note reminded me that the runza sounded familiar, when you mentioned it yesterday, Granny, so I went looking, and sure enough. You were kind enough to share your Cabbage Runza recipe with us, back on the old boards, and it's listed in our index. I'm going to give this a try after things settle down around here. I'll probably be lazy, though, and use frozen bread dough. Very Happy

http://allaboutbigbrother.forumotion.com/cooking-and-baking-f3/cabbage-runza-t36.htm

It was fun reading about your evening, Mappy! I'd have settled for a bit of that peace and quiet (but not the snow squall), last night. Instead, I had four kids, very excited to be celebrating New Year's Eve at "Nanny's" house. We were up till after 1 a.m., tossing confetti in the air, blowing horns, and toasting each other with white grape juice in wine glasses. geek drunken A good time was had by all. Now, they're scattered all over the house, "sleeping it off" Laughing . . . and here I am, sneaking in a few moments with you, enjoying a cup of coffee and savoring the quiet before we start all over again. Very Happy

And, how are things with you on this first day of the new year?

Oh, and P.S. That steak and shrimp sure sounded pretty special to me, Lori! Any leftovers?

New Year's tradition in my family was to eat Herring and Crackers at midnight (with our champagne) to usher in the New Year? I am not sure where that tradition came from, but yesterday I noticed at the store that they were selling lots of herring.

Happy New Year everyone!

Inky....I have a ton left over. My youngest went over to friend's last night (he's the big shrimp eater) and I have 2 steaks leftover as well plus a big bowl of salad. We are going out to dinner with my dad tonight; hubby has to work so he can eat the leftovers! Laughing

I didnt know pork and saukraut was so popular for New year's , i always thought it was corn beef and hash!!

I don't care for black eyed peas plain either but the soup is real good. My dad makes it so I don't have the recipe off hand. It has lots of other veggies in it too.
