Chocolate is scrumptious, but got a bad rep because of having so much fat and sugar added to candy bars. It's now known that real chocolate, the dark and bitter kind, is full of good things which are healthy, so someone's written a book on how to use it in healthy ways.

"Health by Chocolate" by Victoria Laine (a health nutritionist), published by OwL Medicine Books, $24.95

Here's a sample recipe from my local paper:

Healthy Turtle Bonbons:

12 whole medjool, or other large dates
12 whole pecans of walnuts
3/4 cup (175mL) dark choc chips

Line a tray or flat plate with waxed or parchment paper or plastic wrap.
With fingers, gently remove pit from each date, and replace it with a nut.
Gently squeeze the date closed around the nut.
Melt chocolate chips. Roll each stuffed date in the melted chocolate using a fork or tongs.
Place individual treats on the prepared tray so they don't touch, and allow to cool and set on the counter, or in the fridge if the room is warm.
When coating has hardened, serve on a glass or decorative plate or in individual small baking cups or candy holders.

*For those who love the bitterness of cocoa powder and want an extra edge, roll each turtle on cocoa powder before allowing to cool and set.

I'm all for healthy chocolate!
