| Great post Lisa. I read the first book and enjoyed it. I don't know what to say about someone thinking it is satanic. I don't. I like Halloween too so what can I say. |

She claims the books are Satanic. |
This reminds me of the outcry over the Harry Potter books when they first came out. I teach at a Catholic school and we always have to be respectful of those who think topics like vampires and such are satanic. However, the great majority of our 12 and up group are reading this series and absolutely loving them!! Kids who normally don't enjoy reading are devouring these books!! Lisa, your post was excellent. _________________ "To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven."

| | Lisa wrote: | I just finished reading the twilight books - all four in four days! phew! After the I finished the last one, Breaking Dawn, I went to see the movie and then I saw the movie again, after I was told once is not good enough. Anyway - I'm going to start re-reading the series again, due to some crazy people saying you miss quite a bit in the first readings.
As for why 13-14 year old shouldn't read the books....well, it is a love story - think Romeo and Juliet with a different ending. However, yes there's the things about vampires and werewolves that one begins to believe as they read the books. Personally, I don't think it's any different then believing in Cinderella and how her Prince sweeps her away to "happily ever after" (we all know how that works). I will say though, it does pull on your heartstrings and emotions and feelings, as the reader wants more and more and more and will not be satisfied until the last book on the last page of the last line.
Is there anything "satanic" in the books? I suppose the whole vampire thing could be satanic - but the author does a GREAT job at dispelling the stereotypical myths of Vampires. No coffins and no crosses to thwart the vampires, etc... The topic of souls comes up a lot but in a very positive good fashion. Although the pretense that vampires are of the dead is always hanging out there, the reader can't help to think that these vampires (the main characters) are of this life (not, undead). However the underlying message of immortality is always lingering and if that is something parents do not want to discuss with their children, I could see the need to not allow this book. On the other hand - the book is fictional fantasy!
I have a 10 year old daughter and yes, I took her to my second viewing of the movie. There wasn't much "detail" in the movie and it wasn't as riveting as the book. Will I let her read the books? Definitely in a couple of years. If I can plant the seed that "Edward" should be the type of guy she should date and fall in love with and live happily ever after with, then yes it will be something she definitely reads! That in itself should prevent much of the "puppy love" heartaches during adolescence! IMO, no guy will ever live up to Edward! HAHA - He just might be the greatest deterrent to bad relationships!
Hope this helps - they are great books and quite addicting. My addiction to them reminded me of a few summers ago staying up all hours of the night watching two people sleep! At least with the books, I was able to see the ending I had created a few summers ago~ HAHAHAHA |
Lisa! Who are you? You dove into my head, took out all my thoughts and wrote them perfectly in your post. Although, I haven't read the books I have seen the movie and I am now obsessed. I even wrote a friend last night that the whole Twilight Saga sucked me in just like the "couple" from a few summers ago. Thank you for giving wings to what I couldn't say myself.
As for the whole satanic thing, hmmm? IMO, the only satanic thing about Twilight the movie was the threesome James, Laurent and Victoria. They were amped up vampirical serial killers that relished the hunt and kill of humans in a demonic way.
JW, if your granddaughters have some sense of maturity and can separate the fantasy from real life I don't see the harm in them reading the books. But, as I stated before I have not read the books, I only saw the first movie.
Also, I may be different then most. I was reading adult books at a young age. I would steal my mom's books to read. Such as, Jacqueline Susann's Once is not Enough when I was thirteen/fourteen.
P.S. A little bird told me that my sister is buying me the Twilight Saga Boxed Set for my Christmas/Birthday combo. I am so STOKED! _________________

| Oh Frances, you're going to have a wonderful Twilight Holiday! lol I can't wait to read your thoughts about the books. As an almost 39 year old, I can say that these books aren't just for teens. I don't post much and have tired from BB, however knowing where all you wonderful women (and men) originated (cryptic, i know) Twilight would be a book you all were destined to read! Here's to hoping Edward dazzles all of you as he's dazzled me~ |

| In my opinion, these books are very romantic with only descriptions of emotions which allow your imagination to flow. What a wonderful gift....the imagination. I agree that it shows girls what a young man can be. And I also agree with Lisa that no young man will live up to "Edward" but he has 100+ years experience, lol. I read the first 3 books in three days and could hardly wait for the 4th book. I hated to see the saga end. Theauthor is writing a book called "Midnight" which is the book Twilight told from Edward's point of view while Twilight was from Bella's point of view. _________________ We did not change as we grew older; we just became more clearly ourselves. | Thanks, all of you. I can't wait until I can cut and paste some of your responses for my daughter. I just finished Twilight and will pass it on to my granddaughters. I'm certain my daughter will get mad at me, but oh well. I do not believe in censorship of books like this. I will buy the second book in the series as soon as I get home. Thanks again. _________________ ModeratorNo matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow. But, BB season is the best! |

| I just finished Jack & Jill by James Patterson. It's about Serial Murders, it's the third in the series of the Alex Cross Murder books. I enjoyed it, moving on to a few Christmas books. |

| Okay...I'll bite. I'm going to order the set. Since I love HP and even purchased, as an heirloom (was my rationalization haha) Tales of the Beedle Bard, I'll jump into another series. Too bad there are only four books though. I'm totally ready to become addicted to another saga LOL |

| I just finished the cutest book. Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World One frigid Midwestern winter night in 1988, a ginger kitten was shoved into the after-hours book-return slot at the public library in Spencer, Iowa. And in this tender story, Myron, the library director, tells of the impact the cat, named DeweyReadmore Books, had on the library and its patrons, and on Myron herself. Through her developing relationship with the feline, Myron recounts the economic and social history of Spencer as well as her own success story—despite an alcoholic husband, living on welfare, and health problems ranging from the difficult birth of her daughter, Jodi, to breast cancer. After her divorce, Myron graduated college (the first in her family) and stumbled into a library job. She quickly rose to become director, realizing early on that this was a job I could love for the rest of my life. Dewey, meanwhile, brings disabled children out of their shells, invites businessmen to pet him with one hand while holding the Wall Street Journal with the other, eats rubber bands and becomes a media darling. The book is not only a tribute to a cat—anthropomorphized to a degree that can strain credulity (Dewey plays hide and seek with Myron, can read her thoughts, is mortified by his hair balls)—it's a love letter to libraries. | Well, I read Twilight, New Moon and started Eclipse but another depression has a strong hold on me and I haven't been able to read for the last two weeks. What I can tell you is that I love these books and they are in my top favorites list. I'm a bit angry that with all the feelings I feel and I feel on a grand scale, I couldn't have written something similar. It's hard to explain but once you get to know me you would understand what I'm trying to convey. Keep reading wonderful boardmates! _________________ |

I read it last week. It was very sad and I am still debating whether to let my grandson read it. For the most part it will be WAY above his head. After all, he has nothing that would even have him associate "Out-With" with Auschwitz. I think it may be something we will attempt to read out loud together. We do that occasionally with books that may be a little above his head. That way we can discuss it step by step.
Sad, yes. But glad I read it._________________ ModeratorNo matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow. But, BB season is the best! |
